Corporate Responsibility is a concept that has been discussed by U.S. firms for about a century. It focuses on the theory that firms have responsibilities to a wide range of stakeholders.These responsibilities are a function of the social compact between the firm and the society in which it operates.

Strategic Philanthropy is a relatively new concept. U.S. firms have engaged in philanthropic activities for well over a century but until recently those activities have not been integrated into the firms’strategic objectives. In the last decade or two U.S. firms have refined their philanthropic activities to better align them with their broader strategic focus.This has led to actions that result in both profits and socially positive outcomes.
